I've been approached by some of the newer Dommes, by how they should handle subs. This is a response I wrote, that may help or not, but figured let's just share for the masses.
So, this is a fetish/lifestyle for me. For many it is a job, etc. So I look for 'submissives'. And many look for 'customers'. You should read up on BDSM, power exchange, role reversals, and fetishes, SSC, etc. Those types of things can be lifestyle oriented or professionally done. Dominatrix is a professional, and a lifestyle domme is not. I dont want 'customers'. I dont want someone to pay me to do whatever their fantasy is. I am instead paid, as a form of power exchange. I look for those who understand that there is freedom in their submission. That means I do not have things for sale, schedule sessions, etc. And kudos to those that enjoy that dynamic of financial domination. Finding your way of dominating, is key.
Once you figure out what you want - you will attract those interested in what you want. It'll become easier to recognize patterns, and through experience and dealing with the subs, you'll spot the ones who arent worth your time.
I suggest reading and doing some research, and basically just being yourself. Dont try and change and fit the mold, because most honest boys can see that a mile away. Find out what you want, how you want it - and dont give in. It will take time to settle into something comfortable. The entire community is saturated by folks seeing someone else do something, and they copy it. You will find success, by being yourself and bringing what only you can bring to the table.
I hope this wasnt confusing and I hoped it helped! Please ask more questions if you have them.
