If you approach a Domme, you should have a clear understanding of what your desires are.  Dommes and subs come in all shapes, sizes, abilities and desires.  When you approach me, I will expect you to have your own desires and boundaries well laid out and be able to communicate them with me clearly as well as negotiate terms.

Providing a baseline understanding of the kind of dynamic you are looking for can maximize your pleasure as well as your pain.  When I tell you to show your appreciation, you should immediately proceed to my wish list and purchase a gift.  My time and attentions to you, cost me time (money) and energy (both physically and emotionally.)  In order for me to provide you with the best possible experience, please think through what you want, and be ready to communicate those needs clearly.  How much of my time would you like?  What kind of experience would you like?  How much is it worth to you?
